Unsurprisingly, Aaron Glenn is going to the Detroit Lions well to pump some offense into the New York Jets.
Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand has been hired as the Jets' offensive coordinator, the team announced Friday.
Engstrand's addition will round out first-year head coach Glenn's coordinator staff, as he joins defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and special coordinator Chris Banjo.
In Engstrand, Glenn is no doubt hoping to provide an infusion of offense, the likes of which was seen in Detroit over the past two seasons, into the Jets.
Detroit, under offensive coordinator Ben Johnson -- who is now the Chicago Bears head coach -- was the No. 1 scoring offense in 2024 and the fifth-most prolific unit in 2022 and 2023.
Engstrand was with Detroit the past five seasons, holding the title of offensive passing game coordinator for the previous three years.
He'll be taking on his biggest role yet with the Jets and looking to lift their offense from a unit that was 24th in points scored last season -- its highest ranking since finishing 23rd in 2018. New York hasn't had a top-10 scoring offense since 2008, with Brian Schottenheimer at OC and Brett Favre at quarterback.
The 42-year-old began his coaching path as a graduate assistant at the University of San Diego under Jim Harbaugh in 2005. He worked his way up to becoming the program's offensive coordinator and later moved on to Michigan as an offensive analyst with Harbaugh in 2018. In 2020, he was the XFL's DC Defenders offensive coordinator before moving on, in the same year, to join the Lions as an offensive assistant.
Rightly or wrongly, Engstrand will be saddled with some high expectations as comparisons to Johnson will no doubt be prevalent.
The good news for Engstrand is he'll have some talent at his disposal in Gotham.
Though the looming offseason headline of what becomes of quarterback Aaron Rodgers will dominate the news cycle, the Jets have some sterling young talent in the form of wide receiver Garrett Wilson, running back Breece Hall and offensive linemen Alijah Vera-Tucker and Joe Tippmann.
Glenn's got his coordinators set and his Motor City-fueled offense on the way.
