The Los Angeles Chargers are counting on rookie receiver Ladd McConkey hitting the ground running in Year 1. So far, so good for the second-round pick.
During offseason workouts last month, quarterback Justin Herbert glowed about the strides McConkey had already made learning the new offense.
"He's just picked up the offense so easily. It's like he's been a four- or five-year vet," Herbert said, via Kris Rhim of ESPN. "He understands the game."
The starting QB's praise is notable, as the rookie is in line to see a host of targets in Greg Roman's run-first offense.
The Chargers parted ways with veterans Keenan Allen and Mike Williams during the offseason, putting McConkey, Josh Palmer, Quentin Johnston and D.J. Chark atop the receiver corps. Health will be key for McConkey to reach his rookie potential after getting nicked up last season.
Entering the NFL with excellent route-running and YAC ability, if he continues to make strides, McConkey has a chance to lead L.A. in receiving out of the gate.
