Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters on Wednesday that holdout safety Kam Chancellorwon't play in Sunday's season opener against the Rams.
A short time later, Chancellor reached out to NFL Network's Dan Hellie to offer his opinion on the contract stalemate that has weakened Seattle's famed Legion of Boom.
Hellie reported on NFL Total Access that Chancellor told him he is willing to meet Seattle halfway and that the two sides are less than $1 million dollars apart. He said he's not looking for new money, but wants salary currently allocated for the 2017 season to be moved to 2016. Chancellor used the word "petty" in describing the negotiations, according to Hellie.
"He told me he feels like this whole thing could be over by now," Hellie said Chancellor messaged him.
"What they're worried about is a precedent," Rapoport said. "... While Kam Chancellor rightfully so wants to be paid among the game's highest-paid safeties, the Seahawks are now worried about will all the other players do the exact same thing when it's their turn in a couple years."
The next man up for Seattle is Dion Bailey, who should be in the starting lineup when the Seahawks begin the defense of their conference title against the St. Louis Rams.
