Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas worked out Wednesday at the Hokies' pro day, and quarterback guru George Whitfield said Thomas "put on a show."
Then again, Thomas is a Whitfield client, so ...
The varying opinions on Thomas -- who might be the most physically gifted quarterback in this class but also the most inconsistent -- continue to percolate. When asked what round he'll be selected, Thomas told the Richmond Times-Dispatch "Anywhere from 1-7, really. I hear it all. I guess we'll just have to see."
Thomas measured 6-foot-6 and 248 pounds and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.61 seconds at last month's NFL Scouting Combine. That size, his athleticism and his uneven quarterback play have led some to speculate that his best position at the next level would be tight end.
For his part, Whitfield thinks Thomas can be a quarterback in the NFL. He told the that he receives feedback from NFL scouts and said a lot of them compare Thomas' college career to Jay Cutler's at Vanderbilt. Cutler, though, was a much more polished passer coming out of college and was a first-round pick. While Thomas said he thinks he could go in the first round, he seems far more likely to be a third-day selection.
Coaches such as Philadelphia's Chip Kelly and San Francisco's Jim Harbaugh were at Virginia Tech's pro day, though it seems stud cornerback Kyle Fuller might have been a more logical focal point. Both teams could use a cornerback, and Fuller generally is considered in the second tier of corners, below Michigan State's Darqueze Dennard and Oklahoma State's Justin Gilbert, both of whom are considered first-round locks. A third corner easily could go late in the first round, and it's likely it will be Fuller, TCU's Jason Verrett (who had shoulder surgery earlier this week) or Ohio State's Bradley Roby.
Still, Thomas is known for his huge arm and Whitfield told the Times "a lot of these guys wanted to see one of the rare arms in football. Not just college."
Being a quarterback requires more than a strong arm, and anyone who has seen Thomas play quarterback realizes that fact. He does have a tantalizing upside, but there certainly is reason to doubt he ever reaches his potential as a quarterback, even if he did put on a show Wednesday.
