LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger's speedy recovery from a torn ACL has progressed to the point where he has decided to show off his throwing arm for NFL coaches and scouts at LSU's pro day on April 9. It's quite a triumph given that the Tigers' former fifth-year senior is only three-plus months removed from the injury, particularly given that his surgery to repair the damage was delayed until early January while doctors waited for a sprain MCL to heal.
Mettenberger had a spectacular final college season with 3,082 yards and 22 touchdowns to just eight interceptions, completing 65 percent of his passes, and could be a high-value pick in the middle rounds of the NFL draft.
Mettenberger announced his intention to participate in pro day on ESPN.
"The doctors are thoroughly impressed with where he is and the progress he has made," said Seth Katz, his agent. "He's weeks ahead of schedule and it's nothing surprising."
With still another month to continue rehabilitation before LSU's pro day, there are no plans for Mettenberger to run the 40-yard dash, according to Katz. But as a pure pocket passer at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, it's his arm that NFL personnel men will be interested in, not his speed. Mettenberger injured his knee in LSU's regular-season finale against Arkansas last November when he was tackled awkwardly by Arkansas' Byran Jones after releasing a pass.
