The embattled secondary of the New York Jets just can't catch a break.
One week after Green Bay wideout Jordy Nelson fried Gang Green for 209 yards through the air, Chicago's duo of Alshon Jeffery and Martellus Bennett piled up a combined 13 catches for 159 yards and two scores on Monday night. After losing both of those games, the Jets are now tasked with stopping Calvin Johnson and the Lionscome Sunday.
"No doubt," Johnson said, when asked by reporters if he's "licking his lips" to face New York's less-than-pristine collection of cornerbacks, per Dom Cosentino of NJ.com. "You definitely look forward to the challenge of getting single coverage high out there."
Single high coverage is what the Jets have leaned on heavily with Darrin Walls and converted safety Antonio Allen filling in at cornerback for the injured Dee Milliner. The scheme asks a safety to cover the deep portion of the field, helping to prevent your corners -- when it's working -- from being exposed.
The Jets haven't been a disaster in pass coverage, not to the level some expected, but Megatron represents a new frontier. Doubling the league's most dangerous pass-catcher makes sense, but that's the problem with the Lions: You still have Golden Tate, Reggie Bush and Joique Bell to think about.
"If they want to do that," Johnson said of being doubled up, "then we have a plethora of other playmakers who can go out there and get the job done as well. You kind of have to pick your poison."
