Are the Miami Dolphins heading for a makeover?
Team owner Stephen Ross -- hell-bent on turning the Dolphins into the talk of the town -- went public last month with his desire to overhaul Miami's uniforms and logo.
He wasn't kidding around.
Ben Volin of The Palm Beach Post reported Friday that the Dolphins are "well into discussions with the league" about changes for the 2013 season.
A source at league headquarters told Volin that Dolphins officials and the NFL have swapped emails and mock-ups for several weeks. The team has until November to finalize changes for the 2013 campaign.
"We're not talking about changing colors or taking the sun off the helmet," Dolphins CEO Mike Dee told The Post on Thursday. "It's not going to be like when Tampa Bay changed from orange to pewter gray. It's definitely keeping one eye on what's traditional in the logo intact, while keeping one eye on a 21st century version of that."
So what does this mean for the plump, somewhat agitated Dolphin on the current helmet -- the one we've known in various forms since 1966? We don't know for sure, but Volin has seen mock-ups and believes a new design would tilt closer to the old logo for Dolphin Stadium (pictured at right).
Dee called that assumption "inaccurate," but Volin insisted that the mock-ups he's seen hedge closer to this than the current logo.
The Dolphins haven't confirmed a change and aren't giving away hints, but this one feels like it's in the mail.
