Former NFL linebacker Micheal Barrow has left his position as an assistant coach at the University of Miami to tend to a family matter, and the timing couldn't be more unusual with fall camp opening not only at Miami but across college football. Similar to the NFL, the winter is turnover season for college football coaches.
A UM release described Barrow's departure as a sabbatical, but the comments from both Barrow, who coached linebackers, and Golden suggested Barrow won't be back, at least not at UM.
"We wish Micheal, Shelly and their children all the best as they enter a new chapter in their lives and we certainly hope Mike will return to coaching and mentoring young people in the near future," Golden said.
Barrow also addressed the timing of his departure.
"With the 2014 football season starting soon, please know that I am truly sorry if my decision brings the organization any inconveniences," he said.
Barrow played 13 NFL seasons with five clubs. He was a second-round draft pick of the Houston Oilers in 1993 after a stellar college career at Miami in which he was a consensus All-American and played for two national championship teams.
