Michigan State's Trae Waynes to visit with Rams

The St. Louis Rams should be in the market for a cornerback, and the best corner in the draft is scheduled to visit with the team Tuesday.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Michigan State's Trae Waynes is traveling to St. Louis. In addition to cornerback, the Rams need help along the offensive line, at wide receiver and at safety. The question, then, is which position do they go for in the first round? Safety seems extremely unlikely, as there is no safety available worth their No. 10 pick.

Waynes (6-foot-0, 186 pounds) answered questions about his speed when he turned in a clocking of 4.31 seconds in the 40 at the NFL Scouting Combine. Waynes is known for his physicality and aggressiveness, and looks to have the needed skill set to be a press-man corner. He also was good against the run while with the Spartans.

One issue is that he sometimes is too physical with his hands. But that's the way Michigan State corners are taught, and presumably, Waynes is savvy enough to scale back on that aspect of his game.

At this point, St. Louis' top two corners appear to be Janoris Jenkins and E.J. Gaines, so a young corner with talent is needed.

All six NFL Media analysts who have done a mock draft have Waynes going between 10th and 14th in the draft. One has him going to the Rams, and three have him going to the cornerback-needy Minnesota Vikings -- who pick 11th.
