We haven't heard much from Mike Tannenbaum since the New York Jets relieved him of his general manager duties on Dec. 31. There might be a reason for that.
An intriguing tweet, courtesy of NFL.com's Ian Rapoport:
We reached out to Rapoport for more information. He told us Tannenbaum will struggle to sell himself as a sound salary-cap mind after leaving a Jets team that made unwise long-term investments in players such as Mark Sanchez, David Harris and Calvin Pace.
Also working against Tannenbaum: A shift in what teams are looking for from a GM. Four of the five open GM positions this month went to candidates with a background primarily in scouting and personnel.
Only John Idzik, Tannenbaum's replacement in New York, made his name on the business side. Idzik attended personnel meetings and did some scouting for the Seattle Seahawks, but he built his career as a "cap guy."
As for Tannenbaum, it's easy to forget he was running the show when the Jets went to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in 2009 and 2010. He's had his moments, but there's no hiding the fact he's currently saddled with an image problem.
