Christian Ponder recently suggested that Matt Cassel is the favorite to start the season as the Minnesota Vikings' quarterback.
Whether that's the case or not, coach Mike Zimmer doesn't plan to name his Week 1 starter until well into training camp.
"I want to give everybody an opportunity and make sure that it's a legitimate opportunity for all of them," Zimmer said Tuesday, per USA Today's Tom Pelissero. "Then we'll start narrowing down the reps as we get going. But it won't be for a while."
Zimmer explained that he wants to guard against rushing into a decision as opposed to "making the correct decision."
Although Zimmer has stated the organization obviously hopes Bridgewater will earn the job, their first-round investment might have to wait until later in the season to push Cassel aside.
Zimmer insists Cassel has not been established as the favorite.
"I've never said that," Zimmer added Tuesday, via The Star Tribune. "I know I've heard other people say it, but I've never said it."
It's worth noting that all six quarterbacks drafted in the first or early second round over the past two years have have gone on to start the opener.
