The Green Bay Packers have placed starting inside linebacker Nick Barnett, who had wrist surgery Wednesday, on season-ending injured reserve and re-signed defensive lineman Mike Montgomery, according to the team's official website.
"What they found (during surgery) was what we were hoping not to see," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Friday.
Barnett was injured during a Week 4 victory over the Detroit Lions. His 24 tackles still rank fourth on the team.
Montgomery, a sixth-year pro out of Texas A&M, was selected by the Packers in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft and played in 56 games with eight starts during his five seasons in Green Bay (2005-09). He signed with the Minnesota Vikings but was released during training camp.
"Mike Montgomery has been in our program, knows our defense, and we felt he would be able to come in on short notice and play as needed," McCarthy said.
