It's a new week in May, which means the New England Patriots cut another cornerback.
The Patriots announced Monday they released Chimdi Chekwa.
Exactly a week ago the Patriots released cornerback Kyle Arrington. The previous week they released Alfonzo Dennard. That was after losing started Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner in free agency.
Chekwa was a low-level signing in March after he spent four -- mostly disappointing -- years with the Oakland Raiders. The 6-foot former Ohio State Buckeye was one of several cheap veterans the Patriots inked this offseason. It's not a good sign he couldn't make it out of May on the roster.
The Patriots' current cornerback depth chart includes Malcolm Butler, Bradley Fletcher, Logan Ryan and Robert McClain.
With most coaches, the corner issue might be cause for concern. But Bill Belichick has earned latitude as the NFL's premiere strategist adept at adjusting his style each offseason. Perhaps we see Devin McCourty slide down and play a bit more corner this year. Perhaps Belichick believes in the upside of Butler and Fletcher. Or perhaps he's got a whole different plan up his sleeve.
