We have another member of the 500 Club, as Eli Manning joined a small group of quarterbacks who have passed for more than 500 yards in a single game.
Sept. 16, 2012:
Eli Manning struggled early against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with some costly interceptions. But he ended the game with 510 passing yards and three touchdown passes as he rallied the New York Giants to a 41-34 win. The Giants scored 25 fourth-quarter points for the victory.
Jan. 1, 2012:
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford lit up the defending champions as he completed 36 of 59 passes for 520 yards and five touchdowns. Stafford should give a nod to his shoddy defense, which made it necessary for him to keep firing the ball in a 45-41 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Sept. 12, 2011:
New England Patriots' Tom Brady kicked of the 2012 season in style with a 517-yard passing performance against the host Miami Dolphins. Brady did get a boost from a 99-yard touchdown pass to Wes Welker.
Dec. 20, 2009:
Ben Roethlisberger opened the scoring with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Mike Wallace, and he didn't stop until he tossed for 503 yards and three touchdowns against the Packers. His 19-yarder in the fourth quarter to Wallace was the winning score.
Nov. 19, 2006:
Drew Brees attempted 52 passes as he finished with 510 yards and two touchdowns in the New Orleans Saints loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Nov. 5, 2000:
When you think of big-time quarterback performances, you don't often think of Elvis Grbac. But the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback threw for 504 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Oakland Raiders.
Nov. 10, 1996:
Boomer Esiason completed 35 of 59 passes for 522 yards and three touchdowns in the Arizona Cardinals' win over the Washington Redskins. It's hard to imagine which was rarer; a Cardinals win in those days, or 500 passing yards.
Dec. 16, 1990:
The run-and-shoot was never better than when Warren Moon passed for 527 yards and three touchdowns against the Chiefs. This must have reminded Moon of what it was like to play in the Canadian Football League.
Oct. 23, 1988:
It's kind of hard to fathom that Dan Marino only made this list once, because it seemed like he was always putting up mega performances. You would think he would do this every year. His most prolific game was when he passed for 521 yards and three touchdowns.
Oct. 13, 1985:
Phil Simms completed 40 of 62 passes for 513 yards. What's amazing is Simms had only one touchdown and it came late on a 24-yard score to George Adams. With that many yards, you figure he'd accidentally throw three scores, at least.
Dec. 26, 1982:
Oct. 28, 1962:
Y.A. Tittle threw for 505 yards in a win over the Redskins, but that number took a back seat to his NFL record-tying seven touchdowns. Now this is the kind of 500-yard passing game we're talking about.
Sept. 28, 1951:
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Norm Van Brocklin set the bar too high when he passed for 554 yards and five touchdowns in a win over the New York Yanks. Amazingly, all of these decades later, Van Brocklin's mark still stands.
