The Cardinals hired Ossenfort, who spent the past three seasons as the Titans director of player personnel, on Jan 16. The Cardinals hired Jonathan Gannon, who has been with the Eagles as defensive coordinator since 2021, as the team's next head coach, on Feb. 14, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per sources. On Feb. 18, Gannon reportedly made the first big addition to his coaching staff, hiring Eagles LB coach Nick Rallis as the Cardinals' new defensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported, per sources. The Cardinals continued adding to their coaching staff a day later, Feb. 19, by hiring Browns quarterbacks coach Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator, per Pelissero, according to sources.

The Falcons hired Nielsen as their new defensive coordinator on Jan. 27. Nielsen spent the past six seasons in New Orleans as an assistant coach, and was the Saints co-DC last season under Dennis Allen.

The Ravens hired Monken, who had been the OC at the University of Georgia since 2020, to replace Greg Roman on Feb. 14. Monken has NFL coordinating experience, leading offenses in Tampa Bay and Cleveland prior to joining the Bulldogs' staff.

The Panthers hired Reich on Jan. 26. Reich was fired as Colts HC on Nov. 7 following a 3-5-1 start to the 2022 season. Reich generated a 40-33-1 regular-season record in four and a half seasons in Indy with a 1-2 postseason record. Carolina hired Evero as their new defensive coordinator on Feb. 5. Evero spent one season as the Broncos defensive coordinator. The Panthers hired Brown on Friday, Feb. 17. Brown was previously the Rams assistant head coach.

The Browns hired Schwartz as their new defensive coordinator on Jan. 17, per NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero. This is not Schwartz's first stint in Cleveland as he got his NFL start with the Browns under Bill Belichick as a personnel scout from 1993-1995.

Schottenheimer was named Dallas' offensive coordinator on Feb. 4. The veteran assistant replaces Kellen Moore, who parted ways with the Cowboys on Jan. 29 and joined the Chargers as the same capacity.

The Broncos and Saints agreed to a trade that will make Payton the next head coach in Denver, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Jan. 31. New Orleans will receive a 2023 first-round draft pack and an second-round pick in the 2024 draft as part of the trade, while Denver will also receive a third-round draft pick. The team officially named Payton as head coach on Feb. 3. Good Morning Football's Peter Schrager reported on Feb. 23 that Vance Joseph will return to Denver as Payton's new defensive coordinator. Joseph previously was Broncos' head coach from 2017-2018. The Broncos announced on Feb. 25 that Joe Lombardi will be reuniting with Sean Payton as the team's new offensive coordinator, along with many other coaching hires.

The Texans have hired Ryans, the former 49ers defensive coordinator, to be their next head coach, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Jan. 31. It's a return to Houston for Ryans, a former linebacker who began his NFL career as a second-round selection by the Texans in 2006. Ryans spent six seasons in Houston. The team has since announced Ryans' hiring. On Feb. 10, Ryans reportedly made the first big addition to his coaching staff, hiring Cardinals DL coach Matt Burke as the Texans' new defensive coordinator. On Feb. 12, Ryans made another addition to his coaching staff, hiring 49ers offensive passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik as the Texans' new offensive coordinator.

The Colts hired Steichen, the former Eagles offensive coordinator, as their next head coach on Feb. 14. Indianapolis turns to a rookie head coach after Steichen helped forge a high-powered offense during his two year-stint in Philadelphia, which culminated in an appearance in Super Bowl LVII. The Colts are finalizing a deal to hire Cooter as their OC, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported on Feb. 20. Indianapolis is also retaining Gus Bradley as its defensive coordinator.

The Chiefs promoted Nagy to offensive coordinator on Feb. 24 after previous OC Eric Bieniemy left the position to become the Commanders' OC. Nagy, who spent four years as the head coach of the Chicago Bears, spent the 2022 season as the Chiefs' senior offensive assistant.quarterbacks coach.

The Chargers hired Moore as their new offensive coordinator, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Jan. 30. The news came one day after Moore and the Cowboys mutually agreed to part ways after four seasons as OC in Dallas. Ansley was officially promoted to DC by the club on Feb. 27 after two seasons directing the secondary.

The Rams hired LaFleur as their next OC, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Jan. 27. LaFleur and the Jets mutually parted ways on Jan. 11 after two seasons. Los Angeles confirmed the hiring later on Jan. 27.

Fangio agreed to terms with Miami on a three-year deal to become its new defensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported on Jan. 29. The Dolphins formally announced the hire on Feb. 15. Fangio was formerly the Broncos head coach from 2019-21.

The Vikings are hiring Brian Flores as their next defensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Feb. 6. Flores was the Steelers senior defensive assistant and LBs coach.

The Patriots have hired O'Brien as their next offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported the news on Jan. 24, and New England confirmed the hiring Jan. 26.

The Saints are expected to hire Woods as their new defensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Feb. 6, per sources. Woods replaces Kris Richard and Ryan Nielsen, who were New Orleans' co-DCs in 2022.

The Jets hired Hackett, the former Broncos head coach, on Jan. 26 to replace the departed Mike LaFleur. Hackett was fired on Dec. 26 after a 4-11 start to his first season in Denver. LaFleur and the Jets mutually parted ways on Jan. 11 after two seasons.

The 49ers plan to hire Wilks as their defensive coordinator, NFL Network Insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported on Feb. 7. Wilks, most recently the Panthers' interim coach, replaces DeMeco Ryans, who was hired by the Texans as their next head coach.

The Titans finalized the hire of Carthon as their new general manager on Jan. 17, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported. Carthon was previous the 49ers director of player personnel. Tennessee promoted Kelly to offensive coordinator on Feb. 7.

The Commanders are hiring Bieniemy as their new offensive coordinator, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Friday, Feb. 17. Bieniemy was the OC with the Kansas City Chiefs for the past five seasons, which included two Super Bowl wins. Bieniemy will also carry an assistant head coach title on Ron Rivera's staff.

FIRED

  • Head coach Kliff Kinsgbury


Kingsbury was fired on Jan. 9 following a 4-13 season and just one season after he signed a contract extension through the 2027 season. Kingsbury served as Arizona's head coach for four years, going 28-37-1 and reaching the postseason just once.

Rhule was fired on Oct. 10, five weeks into his third year with the Panthers. Rhule's time in Carolina produced just an 11-27 record over two-plus seasons, including consecutive five-win campaigns and a 1-4 start in 2022. Steve Wilks served as the Panthers' interim coach, leading Carolina to a 7-10 record and the brink of an NFC South title. Snow was fired along with Rhule.

Woods was relieved of his duties on Jan. 9, one day after the conclusion of the 2022 regular season. Woods had been with the Browns since 2020. Priefer was fired on Jan. 21 after four seasons in Cleveland.

Hackett was fired on Dec. 26 after a 4-11 start to his first season in Denver. Senior assistant Jerry Rosburg served as the Broncos' interim coach for their final two games.

  • Head coach Lovie Smith


Smith was fired on Jan. 8, hours after the Texans' season-ending win over the Colts. Smith served as Houston's head coach for just one season, leading the Texans to a 3-13-1 record. Smith is the second Houston coach in as many years to go one-and-done; David Culley was replaced by Smith during the 2022 offseason after a 4-13 season in 2021.

Reich was fired on Nov. 7 following a 3-5-1 start to the 2022 season. Reich generated a 40-33-1 regular-season record in four and a half seasons in Indy with a 1-2 postseason record. He was replaced by former Colts center and ESPN analyst Jeff Saturday as interim coach; Saturday's Colts went 1-7 in eight games. Brady was fired one week before Reich after serving as OC for just over a season.

Lombardi and Day were fired on Jan. 17 just three days after the Chargers' 27-points playoff collapse against the Jaguars.

Boyer was fired on Jan. 19 following a season in which Miami's defense ranked 24th in points allowed and 18th in yards allowed.

  • Defensive coordinator Ed Donatell


Donatell was fired on Jan. 19 following a season in which Minnesota's defense ranked 28th in points allowed and 31st in yards allowed.

  • Offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich


The Buccaneers fired Leftwich on Jan. 19 after four seasons in Tampa Bay. Leftwich joined the Bucs as offensive coordinator in 2019 following the hiring of head coach Bruce Arians, under whom Leftwich began his coaching career in Arizona. The Buccaneers also parted ways with five other assistants, while three more, including quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen, have decided to retire.

Robinson was fired after seven seasons as Tennessee's GM on Dec. 6. The Titans compiled a 66-43 record with Robinson in charge, including zero losing seasons. At the time of Robinson's ouster, Tennessee had generated the ninth-highest winning percentage (.606) in the NFL since 2016. Titans VP of player personnel Ryan Cowden took over Robinson's duties on an interim basis. Downing was fired as OC on Jan. 9. Downing had been with the organization since 2019. He was promoted from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator in 2021.

  • Offensive coordinator Scott Turner

The Commanders fired Turner on Jan. 10. Turner had been Washington's offensive coordinator since the 2020 season. The Commanders were never better than 23rd in the league in points scored per game in the three seasons with Turner at the helm.

PARTING WAYS

  • Offensive coordinator Greg Roman


Roman and the Ravens are parting ways after six seasons, the team announced on Jan. 19. Roman had been Baltimore's OC since 2019.

Moore and the Cowboys are parting ways after four seasons, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported.

  • Offensive coordinator Liam Coen

The University of Kentucky on Jan. 10 announced that Coen is returning as the school's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. 

  • Co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach Kris Richard


Richard and the Saints parted ways on Feb. 1 after two seasons, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported.

  • Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur


LaFleur and the Jets mutually parted ways on Jan. 11 after two seasons. The Jets ranked 28th and 29th overall in points per games during LaFleur's two seasons in New York.

STEPPING DOWN

  • General manager Steve Keim


The team announced on Jan. 9 that Keim is stepping down as GM to "focus on his health." Keim initially took an indefinite, health-related leave of absence from the team on Dec. 14. Keim had been the Cardinals' GM since the 2013 season.

  • Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier


The Bills announced on Feb. 28 that Frazier is taking a year off from coaching during the 2023 season. Frazier plans to return for the 2024 campaign. Buffalo hired Al Holcomb as a senior defensive assistant.

RETIREMENTS

  • Defensive coordinator Dean Pees


Pees, 73, announced his retirement on Jan. 9 after 50 years of coaching in football. Pees had been Atlanta's DC for the past two seasons.

OFFICIAL INTERVIEW TIMELINE

Below is the official timeline for permitted interviews, per NFL rules:

  • Jan. 10: Virtual interviews for open head-coach positions can be conducted with coaches whose clubs are not participating in the postseason or whose clubs have a postseason bye (Kansas City and Philadelphia).
  • Jan. 17: In-person and/or virtual interviews may be conducted with head-coach candidates whose teams played on Wild Card Saturday or Sunday.
  • Jan. 18: In-person and/or virtual interviews may be conducted with head coach candidates whose teams played on Wild Card Monday.
  • Jan. 23: In-person and/or virtual interviews with coaches whose teams won a Wild Card game may begin for coordinator positions through Jan. 28, the Saturday prior to Conference Championship games. A request for a coordinator position must be approved if it is not a "shared" position, and/or if the requesting club does not have an assistant head coach in charge of the side of the ball of the coordinator position (i.e., assistant head coach-offense for an offensive coordinator position.) All other interviews with coaches whose teams are still participating in the playoffs are prohibited until Jan. 30.
  • Jan. 30: Assistant coaches whose clubs are participating in the Super Bowl who previously interviewed for another club's head-coach position may have a second in-person or virtual interview with such club no later than Feb. 5, the Sunday prior to the Super Bowl.
  • Feb. 13: Second interviews with assistant coaches whose teams were participating in the Super Bowl may resume.
