HEAD COACHES HIRED
Joe Judge, New York Giants:The Giants are hiringPatriots special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach Joe Judge as their head coach, Rapoport reported on Jan. 7. Judge informed coach Bill Belichick.
Mike McCarthy, Dallas Cowboys: One day after parting ways with Jason Garrett, the Cowboys hired the former Green Bay Packers head coach. McCarthy, who coached Green Bay for 13 seasons, compiled a 125-77-2 regular-season record before he was terminated during the 2018 season.
Matt Rhule, Carolina Panthers: The Panthersfinalized a deal on Jan. 7 for Baylor coach Matt Rhule to become the franchise's fifth permanent head coach in its history. Rhule rose to prominence by taking over an embattled Baylor football program and turning it into a contender in a short amount of time, going from 1-11 in 2017 to 11-1 in 2019.
Ron Rivera, Washington Redskins: It didn't take long for Rivera to find a new landing spot. Rivera agreed to a five-year contract to become the next head coach of the Redskins on Dec. 31. Rivera compiled a 76-63-1 regular-season record as head coach of the Carolina Panthers before he was fired mid-season.
HEAD COACHES OUT
Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys: Garrett was fired on Jan. 5, one week after the end of the Cowboys' disappointing 2019 season, Rapoport reported. Fox Sports' Jay Glazer first reported the news. Garrett's contract was set to expire on Jan. 14. Garrett spent 10 years as Cowboys head coach, leading Dallas to a 85-67 regular-season record, three division titles, two playoff wins and just one losing season.
Jay Gruden, Washington Redskins: Gruden was fired on Oct. 7 following an 0-5 start to the 2019 season. Gruden spent five-plus seasons in Washington after joining the 'Skins in 2014. He left the organization with a 35-49-1 regular-season record and one postseason appearance.
Freddie Kitchens, Cleveland Browns: Kitchens was fired on Dec. 29 after just one season as head coach. Previously the Browns QB coach, Kitchens was hired last January to replace fired coach Hue Jackson. Cleveland went 6-10 in his only year at the helm.
Ron Rivera, Carolina Panthers: Rivera was fired on Dec. 3 after a 5-7 start to the year. The longtime Panthers coach spent eight-plus seasons in Carolina, compiling a 76-63-1 regular-season record and making four postseason appearances. Rivera's Panthers won three straight division title from 2013 through 2015 and made Super Bowl 50 in the 2015 season. Rivera was a two-time Coach of the Year in Carolina.
Pat Shurmur, New York Giants: Shurmur was fired on Dec. 30 after two seasons in New York. Shurmur's Giants went just 9-23 over his two years at the helm. Before he was Big Blue's coach, Shurmur was offensive coordinator of the Vikings.
COACHES WHO ARE SAFE
Doug Marrone, Jacksonville Jaguars: Marrone and general manager Dave Caldwell will return for the 2020 season, the team announced Dec 31. Jaguars owner Shad Khan said "the decision I am making to keep our staff intact for 2020 has nothing to do with our victory on Sunday and everything to do with my positive meetings with Dave, Doug, the coordinators and our players, as well as my belief that this is not the time to consider an overhaul of our organization."
Matt Patricia, Detroit Lions: Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn were given a vote of confidence from Lions owner Martha Firestone Ford on Dec. 17. Ford said both the coach and GM would return for the 2020 season. In two seasons coaching the Lions, Patricia has led Detroit to a 9-21-1 record.
Dan Quinn, Atlanta Falcons: Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff were assured they would return for the 2020 season by Falcons owner Arthur Blank on Dec. 27. Quinn has been with Atlanta since 2015 and led the Falcons to a 43-37 regular-season record, two playoff appearances, one division title and a Super Bowl appearance.
FIRED GENERAL MANAGERS/FRONT OFFICE PERSONNEL
Bruce Allen, Washington Redskins: Allen was dismissed as team president on Dec. 30. Allen joined the organization in 2010, since which the Redskins have logged a 62-97-1 regular-season record, five last-place finishes in the NFC East and just two playoff appearances.
Tom Coughlin, Jacksonville Jaguars: Coughlin was fired as Jaguars executive vice president of football operations on Dec. 18. The 73-year-old's second stint with the organization lasted just shy of three seasons.
John Dorsey, Cleveland Browns: Dorsey and the organization parted ways on Dec. 31 after being unable to reach an agreement on a restructured front office. It ends a mere 24-month stint for Dorsey with the Browns, which saw him dismiss Hue Jackson and hire and fire Freddie Kitchens while the team went 13-18-1 over the past two seasons.
FIRED ASSISTANT COACHES
Chicago Bears: The Bearsfired offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich, offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, tight ends coach Kevin Gilbride and assistant special teams coach Brock Olivo on Dec. 31. The headliner of the group is Helfrich, who joined coach Matt Nagy in Chicago in 2018 as coordinator after leaving Oregon in 2016.
Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys have parted ways with wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal, Lal told NFL Network's Jane Slater. Lal told Slater he was especially proud of the work he did with receivers Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and the resurgent Randall Cobb.
Denver Broncos: In a somewhat surprising move, the Broncos fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, Pelissero reported. Scangarello was with the Broncos, under first-year coach Vic Fangio, for just one season after previously coaching quarterbacks with the 49ers from 2017-2018.
Detroit Lions: Matt Patricia is sticking around in Detroit for another season, but a significant portion of his staff is not. Patricia announced on Dec. 31 the Lions have parted ways with six assistant coaches: special teams coordinator John Bonamego, linebackers coach Al Golden, assistant strength and performance coach Rodney Hill, football performance coordinator Harold Nash, defensive backs coach Brian Stewart and tight ends Chris White. On Jan. 2, Detroit announced that defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni and offensive line coach Jeff Davidson were stepping away from football.
Los Angeles Rams: Los Angeles is not bringing back veteran defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, Rapoport reported and the coach confirmed on. Jan. 6. Phillips' contract expired with the end of the 2019 season and the Rams are declining to renew it. Phillips tweeted following his dismissal that he still wants to coach in 2020.
Miami Dolphins: Miami is moving on from offensive coordinator Chad O'Shea and offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo after one season, Garafolo reported Dec. 30. The team confirmed the moves, in addition to partings ways with safeties coach Tony Oden. O'Shea joined coach Brian Flores' staff after spending 10 seasons as wide receivers coach in New England. A veteran offensive line coach, DeGuglielmo joined Flores' staff as a team analyst but was promoted to O-line coach in July after the Dolphins dismissed Pat Flaherty. Miami's offense ranked 27th in total offense (310.0 YPG) and 25th in scoring offense (19.1 PPG) in 2019.
HIRED ASSISTANT COACHES
Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons hired Tosh Lupoi as their defensive line/rum game coordinator. Lupoi was most recently the Browns defensive line coach after five seasons coaching under Nick Saban at Alabama. Atlanta also made another former Browns coach, Joe Whitt Jr., its defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator.
Buffalo Bills: The Bills hired Eric Washington as their defensive line coach on Jan. 10. Washington joins the team after spending the past two seasons as the Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator.
Chicago Bears: The Bears hired veteran assistant coach Juan Castillo as their offensive line coach on Jan. 5. Pelissero reported the news earlier that week. Castillo was a longtime Eagles offensive line coach and later a defensive coordinator under Andy Reid, who Bears head coach Matt Nagy got his start under.
Cleveland Browns: The Browns are hiring Chad O'Shea to be their receivers coach and passing game coordinator, Rapoport reported. O'Shea spent the past year as the Dolphins' offensive coordinator after 10 years coaching receivers for the Patriots. Miami ranked 27th in total offense in 2019 and 25th in scoring.
Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys are expected to hire Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator and John Fassel as special teams coordinator. Cowboys OC Kellen Moore is also leaning toward returning to Dallas as offensive coordinator. Skip Peete has been hired by the Cowboys to join coach Mike McCarthy's staff as running backs coach, Rapoport reported. Peete reprises a role he held with Dallas from 2007-12.
Denver Broncos: The Broncoslocked up a new offensive coordinator on Jan. 12, hiring former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur a little less than two hours after firing Rich Scangarello, per Rapoport and Garafolo. The details have yet to be finalized by Garafolo reported that the decision had been made on Shurmur's end. In his 20 years as an NFL coach, Shurmur had three previous stints as an OC: with the Rams in 2009-10, Eagles in 2013-15 and Vikings, both as an interim in 2016 before assuming the role full-time the following season.
Los Angeles Rams: The Rams are expected to hire Kevin O'Connell as offensive coordinator and Brandon Staley as defensive coordinator.
Miami Dolphins: Miami is hiring veteran offensive mind Chan Gailey as its offensive coordinator, Pelissero and Rapoport reported. The Fins are also promoting Josh Boyer to defensive coordinator, per Pelissero, to replace Patrick Graham, who's moving on to the Giants.
New York Giants: Big Blue is hiring Patrick Graham as its newest defensive coordinator, Pelissero reported per sources. Graham previously spent 2019 as the Dolphins defensive coordinator and was a longtime assistant in the Patriots organization, so he has ties with new coach Joe Judge. The Giants are also hiring Jerry Schuplinski as their QB coach, sources said Garafolo. Schuplinski was Miami's assistant QB coach last season after spending six sseasons with the Patriots.
Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers have hired Matt Canada as their quarterback coach, Pelissero reported. Canada is a longtime college offensive coordinator and most recently was the OC at Maryland before taking on the interim tag as head coach.
Washington Redskins: Washington is hiring Scott Turner as offensive coordinator and Jack Del Rio as defensive coordinator on Rivera's staff.
