INDIANAPOLIS -- Former Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett ran a 4.64-second official 40-yard dash Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine, leaving no doubt about his prolific athleticism at 272 pounds.
Speed like that in a pass rusher figures to make it all the harder on the Cleveland Browns to pass on Garrett with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. All five NFL.com analysts who have released mock drafts project Garrett to the Browns at No. 1. Analyst Bucky Brooks said the clocking cemented Garrett's status as freak athlete, while NFL.com senior analyst Gil Brandt clocked Garrett even faster at 4.52, and noted a scout behind him said "We can all go home now."
Garrett, however, wasn't satisfied with the 40 time and wants to show he can run faster, per NFL Network's Kimberly Jones.
Later on Sunday, his freakish display continued when he recorded a 41-inch vertical, which would be one of the best marks for a defensive lineman in the past decade.
To add some perspective to his combine, Garrett was heavier than Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski, quicker than Falcons RB Devonta Freeman and faster than Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry.
Garrett entered the draft as a junior following three outstanding seasons for the Aggies in which he compiled 32.5 sacks.
NFL.com analyst Chad Reuter provided some interesting context for Garrett's speed, noting that Ziggy Ansah of the Detroit Lions ran a 4.63 40-yard dash at a very similar size.
