INJURIES/COVID-19
- LT Tyron Smith has suffered an avulsion fracture of the knee, and will have surgery to address the injury Friday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. Rapoport added that the hope is that Smith will be able to return by December.
- DE Kwity Paye (knee) avoided a major injury, coach Frank Reich said. Paye has a realistic shot at playing Week 1 against the Texans.

- TE Matt Bushman fractured his clavicle in Thursday's preseason finale, head coach Andy Reid announced.
- CB Trent McDuffie entered concussion protocol, the team announced in the first half of Thursday's preseason finale.
- QB John Wolford did not participate in practice Thursday after injuring his thumb in yesterday's practice. Per coach Sean McVay, his fingernail was ripped off, making it difficult to grip a football.
- LB Andrew Van Ginkel recently underwent an appendectomy, coach Mike McDaniel said, but there is "significant optimism it won’t affect anything in the season.”
- LB Azeez Ojulari is expected to be OK after an MRI indicated he did not have a major lower body injury, per Rapoport. Olujari had left Thursday's practice early with an apparent injury.
- S Jimmie Ward (hamstring) will be placed on injured reserve to start the season, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced.
- RB Rashaad Penny has COVID, head coach Pete Carroll told the media Thursday. Carroll said Penny is feeling no symptoms and while he will miss Friday's game, he should be back soon after.

- CB Malcolm Butler has been released from injured reserve with an injury settlement, per the NFL transaction wire. The cornerback made headlines with his goal-line interception to secure the Patriots' victory in Super Bowl XLIX, one of two Super Bowl wins Butler had with the team. The 32-year-old initially announced his retirement from the NFL last August, but returned to sign a two-year deal with New England in March. Butler was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 16, ending his comeback season before it could begin.

PRESEASON PARTICIPATION
- QB Jacoby Brissett will start Saturday's preseason game against the Bears, per HC Kevin Stefanski. This will mark Brissett's first appearance in a preseason game this month.
- QB Tim Boyle will start Sunday's preseason finale against the Steelers, HC Dan Campbell told reporters.
- Most Colts starters, aside from running backs Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines, will play in Saturday's preseason finale against the Buccaneers, per Reich.
- QB Tom Brady will start Saturday's preseason finale against the Colts, per HC Todd Bowles.
COACHING MOVES
- Head coach Sean McVay said Thursday that the Rams have hired Jay Gruden as a consultant. Gruden and McVay worked together on the Buccaneers staff in 2008. Gruden later was the Washington head coach from 2014-2019, with McVay serving as one of his assistants from 2014-2016. Gruden most recently spent the 2021 season as the Jaguars' offensive coordinator.
