NFL roundup: Latest league news from Monday, Aug. 30

The Detroit Lions' backup plan is going to need a revision.

Quarterback Tim Boyle suffered a broken thumb in Friday's loss to the Indianapolis Colts and will undergo surgery to repair the injury, coach Dan Campbell told reporters Monday. Detroit doesn't currently have a timeframe for Boyle's recovery and return to action, and while Campbell said he doesn't believe it will end Boyle's season, he admitted he can't yet rule it out.

Detroit will enter the 2021 regular season with Jared Goff at starter and former Purdue standout David Blough as his backup following the news of Boyle's injury. Blough entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns and was acquired by the Lions just hours after Detroit faced Cleveland in a 2019 preseason contest.

A rash of injuries at the quarterback position led to Blough starting Detroit's final five games of the 2019 season. He completed 94 of 174 attempts for 984 yards, a 4:6 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a passer rating of 64. Blough played in one game in 2020, going 6 for 10 for 49 yards and an interception.

After a season in which Goff dealt with his own thumb injury, Detroit will understandably hope Goff remains healthy. Otherwise, the Lions might have to turn to Blough once again.

Roster cuts

• The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released cornerback Antonio Hamilton, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported. The reigning champs are also releasing defensive tackle Kobe Smith, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Offensive tackle Chidi Okeke was waived from the reserve/injured list with an injury settlement.
• The Buffalo Bills released running back Kerrith Whyte, wide receiver Brandon Powell and cornerback Tim Harris.
• The Detroit Lions released wide receiver Breshad Perriman and waived wide receivers Victor Bolden and Damion Ratley, guard Evan Heim, safety Alijah Holder, defensive tackle Miles Brown, cornerback Mike Ford and offensive tackles Dan Skipper and Tyrell Crosby.
• The Arizona Cardinals released wide receiver KeeSean Johnson, offensive lineman Shaq Calhoun, running back Tavien Feaster, center Michal Menet, defensive lineman Cam Murray, cornerback Picasso Nelson, wide receiver A.J. Richardson, linebacker Evan Weaver, punter Ryan Winslow and linebacker Bryson Young. Arizona also released linebacker Terrance Smith an injury settlement. The Cardinals are releasing veteran safety Shawn Williams, a longtime former starter with the Bengals, Pelissero reported.
• The Kansas City Chiefs are waiving rookie safety Devon Key and cornerback Zayne Anderson, Pelissero reported.
• The Miami Dolphins released safety Nate Holley, per Pelissero, and released center Matt Skura, per Rapoport. The team waived wide receiver Robert Foster from the reserve/injured list with an injury settlement. The Dolphins are also releasing linebacker Benardrick McKinney, who the team acquired via trade with the Texans, Rapoport reported.
• The Los Angeles Rams waived defensive backs Brontae Harris, Donovan Olumba and Troy Warner, wide receiver Jeremiah Haydel and guards Jeremiah Kolone and Jordan Meredith.
• The Los Angeles Chargers waived linebackers Jessie Lemonier, Davin Bellamy and Nate Evans, offensive tackle Darius Harper, wide receiver John Hurst, cornerbacks KJ Sails and Donte Vaughn, tight end Matt Sokol, defensive lineman Willie Yarbary, long snapper Cole Mazza and offensive lineman Tyree St. Louis.
• The New York Jets released safety Bennett Jackson. They're also releasing safety J.T. Hassell, per Pelissero. The team also waived linebacker Aaron Adeoye, wide receiver Lawrence Cager, defensive back Lamar Jackson and center Corey Levin.
• The Cleveland Browns are waiving pass rusher Curtis Weaver and tight end Jordan Franks, per Rapoport. They're also waiving rookie defensive tackle Marvin Wilson, per Pelissero. Wilson was among the most coveted undrafted prospects in May. Cleveland is likewise waiving defensive ends Cameron Malveaux and Porter Gustin, per Pelissero. Cleveland has waived quarterback Kyle Lauletta and he's expected to sign elsewhere on a practice squad if he clears waivers, Pelissero reported.
• The Jacksonville Jaguars waived cornerback Corey Straughter.
• The Tennessee Titans waived offensive lineman Chandon Herring and waived guard Ross Reynolds and tackle Brent Qvale from the reserve/injured list with injury settlements.
• The Washington Football Team is waiving quarterback Steven Montez, per Pelissero.
• The Baltimore Ravens released wide receivers Devin Gray and Siaosi Mariner and offensive lineman Michael Schofield.
• The Pittsburgh Steelers are releasing long snapper Kameron Canady, per Rapoport.
• The New England Patriots are waiving seventh-round rookie receiver Tre Nixon, per Rapoport, and releasing defensive end Bill Murray, per Pelissero.
• The Houston Texans waived/injured defensive back Cornell Armstrong and linebacker Tae Davis. The team also released offensive lineman Carson Green, Rapoport reported, and tight end Ryan Izzo, per Pelissero.
• The Las Vegas Raiders released linebacker Darron Lee from the reserve/injured list with an injury settlement.
• The Pittsburgh Steelers released punter Jordan Berry, Pelissero reported.
• The Atlanta Falcons are releasing edge Kobe Jones, Pelissero reported.
• The Philadelphia Eagles are waiving offensive lineman Ross Pierschbacher.
• The Dallas Cowboys are waiving defensive back Steven Parker.
• The Denver Broncos are waiving rookie wide receiver Seth Williams, Pelissero reported, and are waiving quarterback Brett Rypien, NFL Network's James Palmer reporter. Palmer added there's hope that Rypien can return to the team on the practice squad.

Injuries/COVID-19

• The Indianapolis Colts announced that quarterback Carson Wentz, wide receiver Zach Pascal and center Ryan Kelly on their reserve/COVID-19 list. Wentz (foot) was expected to participate in team drills on Monday. The Colts earlier activated guard Quenton Nelson from the reserve/COVID-19 list and placed offensive tackle Sam Tevi (knee) on injured reserve.
• The Jacksonville Jaguars activated pass rusher Josh Allen from the reserve/COVID-19 list.
• The New York Jets activated rookie safety Ashtyn Davis off the physically unable to perform list.
• Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh said wide receiver Marquise Brown (hamstring) will practice Monday. The third-year wideout has been sidelined since July 28.
• The Philadelphia Eagles are activating rookie offensive lineman Landon Dickerson off the NFI list. Dickerson, who the Eagles drafted in the second round, is recovering from a torn ACL suffered at Alabama. The Eagles also announced veteran safety Rodney McLeod has been activated off the PUP list.
• The Arizona Cardinals activated defensive lineman Jordan Phillips from the reserve/COVID-19 list and placed cornerback Darqueze Dennard on injured reserve.
• The Tennessee Titans placed guard Nate Davis on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
• The Baltimore Ravens placed running back J.K. Dobbins, who suffered a torn ACL over the weekend, on injured reserve. Tight end Nick Boyle, who had a season-ending knee injury last year, passed his physical and is off the physically unable to participate list, Pelissero reported via the transaction wire.
• The Houston Texans activated left tackle Laremy Tunsil off the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Trades

• The Jacksonville Jaguars have traded cornerback Sidney Jones to the Seattle Seahawks, the Jaguars announced Monday. The Seahawks gave up a 2022 sixth-round pick for Jones, Pelissero reported. Jones started six games last year in Duval and played in nine overall.
• The Buffalo Bills announced they have traded defensive end Darryl Johnson to the Carolina Panthers for a 2022 sixth-round pick. Johnson, a 2019 seventh-round pick, has primarily played special teams in Buffalo and has compiled two sacks over 31 games.
• The Cincinnati Bengals traded former first-round OL Billy Price to the New York Giants for defensive lineman B.J. Hill.
• The New York Jets announced their acquisition of Texans defensive end Shaq Lawson for a 2022 sixth-round pick is official.

Visits

• The New York Jets are working out defensive end Dion Jordan. Jordan, who was taken third overall in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Dolphins, played last season with the 49ers and saw action in 13 games with one start.
