RG3's health status
Jeff Darlington said Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is doing more this week than he did last week including running sprints one day along with a two-mile run another day. Darlington also reported Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo and five of his teammates traveled to New Jersey to work with a pass rush specialist.
Hakeen Nicks, Victor Cruz update
Kimberly Jones reported wide receiver Hakeem Nicks wants to remain with the New York Giants even though he has not been attending organized team activities and is entering a contract year. She also said Victor Cruz and the Giants both believe a deal will be worked out and Cruz will be with the team this season.
Brandon Spikes working out in Florida
Ian Rapoport told us linebacker Brandon Spikes is not working out at OTAs but is staying in shape in Florida and will attend the New England Patriots' mandatory minicamp in June. Rap Sheet spoke with Ken Whisenhunt, who said Philip Rivers can return to being a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback.
Cowher on the power of football, NFL quarterbacks
Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher joined the show while at the league office in New York for the Heads Up Football Advisory Committee meetings. Cowher said he believes the positives of playing football far outweigh the negatives. He said Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's ranking in the 60s on NFL Network's "Top 100 Players of 2013" is way too low. Cowher said Big Ben is a two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback who should be ranked much higher on the list. Cowher said Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians will have a tough challenge trying to compete in the NFC West as it might be the best division in the NFL. But, he called Arians resourceful and said the coach will put his players in a position to succeed.
New coaches in the best situation
Solomon Wilcots said he believes Arians is in the best situation among new head coaches. He said with Arians' background coaching quarterbacks such as Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Andrew Luck, Wilcots believes Arians can get the most out of Carson Palmer. Willie McGinest took the Chicago Bears and coach Marc Trestman, noting the Bears' Jay Cutler is the best quarterback on any of the teams with a new head coach. He also noted that Chicago was the only winning team in 2012 to replace its head coach.
Namath talks New York Jets
Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath joined the show and talked all things New York Jets. Namath said he thinks Mark Sanchez will win the starting quarterback job in 2013. He believes the Jets drafted Geno Smith due to where the NFL is heading as it concerns mobile quarterbacks. He thinks Smith has a strong arm and can make all the throws.
Challenges facing Sean Payton
McGinest said the biggest impact coach Sean Payton will have in returning to the New Orleans Saints is his feel for the game, especially with his play-calling. Wilcots thinks Payton decision to bring in defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is the right move, citing how Ryan and the Cleveland Browns intercepted Saints quarterback Drew Brees four times in their 2010 meeting.
Hoke on Denard Robinson
Michigan head coach Brady Hoke joined us and said Jacksonville Jaguars rookie wide receiver Denard Robinson did a good job for his team when they put him at running back in the Outback Bowl game against South Carolina. Lucky for Robinson, it was Vincent Smith in the backfield for the following play.
Hoke said Robinson would be willing to play wherever the Jaguars want him to play. Hoke said when counseling players on whether they should enter the NFL draft early, he advises players to gather all possible information before making the best possible decision for them. Hoke said Taylor Lewan spoke with Jake Long and Jeff Backus before deciding to return to Michigan.
Who will be 10th QB on 'Top 100'?
The 'Top 100' crew discussed which quarterback will be revealed as the 10th QB on the list tonight. Michael Silver said he thinks it will be either Carolina Panther Cam Newton or Dallas Cowboy Tony Romo, and Dave Dameshek agreed. Dameshek also said Newton may end up being better than any of the three big rookie QBs from 2012 when all is said and done.
