Nick Saban said at his news conference Monday that he had "said all he can say" about the Crimson Tide's quarterback situation, which remains unsettled as the team enters its first game against West Virginia Saturday.
On Wednesday, he was made to say a little more -- and didn't appreciate it.
Fifth-year senior Blake Sims and heralded transfer Jacob Coker were listed as co-starters on Monday when UA released its official depth chart. Both might play against West Virginia, and Saban has at least acknowledged that neither has beaten out the other to stake a starter's claim to the job. On the SEC's weekly media teleconference, Saban said a reporter's question was "making assumptions" about the competition. He was then pressed as to why Sims, with four more years in the Alabama system than Coker, hasn't been able to establish himself as more experienced quarterbacks typically would. That's when things got terse.
"That's all hypothetical. I'm not going to (answer) hypothetical questions. Our situation here is our situation here," he said. "I've been very upfront with how we're managing it, how we're handling it, which I think is best for our team and our players and that's all I care about. I don't care about 'typically' anything. Or a hypothetical."
Alabama sources have indicated to College Football 24/7 that Sims will get the starting nod on Saturday against the Mountaineers. Coker, who has the stronger arm of the two, could play at some point and continues to compete for the job.
