The Oakland Raiders placed injured left tackle Jared Veldheer on the injured reserve-designated to return list (a.k.a. IR-recall) on Saturday.
The team announced the move, which keeps alive the chance that the veteran tackle could return this season. Veldheer underwent triceps surgery in August.
The Raiders also announced they signed tackle Matt McCants from their practice squad. McCants was a sixth-round draft pick by the New York Giants in 2012.
The Raiders' left tackle situation is a complete mess. Right tackle Khalif Barnes is moving to left tackle for the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Second-round draft pick Menelik Watson showed promise in the preseason but was ruled out of Week 1 with a knee injury.
The decision to start Terrelle Pryor might have been partly due to the shaky play of the Raiders' offensive line. We expect to see Pryor running for his life a lot Sunday and most of this season.
