Representatives from 19 NFL teams -- including three offensive line coaches (an offensive line coach from the Philadelphia Eagles ran the drills for that position) -- were present for Penn State's pro day Thursday, when 11 players worked out indoors on FieldTurf.
Free safety Adrian Amos (6-foot-0 5/8, 215 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.37 and 4.4 seconds. He performed 21 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press, and then stood on the rest of his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine, where he was a top performer among safeties in the 20-yard short shuttle and 60-yard shuttle. Amos had a very good pro-day workout, significantly improving his 40 time, and made himself some money at Penn State's pro day.
Kicker Sam Ficken (6-1 7/8, 215) might be worthy of a late-round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, or could be a priority free-agent pickup following the draft.
Outside linebacker Mike Hull (5-11 7/8, 237) ran the 40 in 4.64, but pulled his left hamstring during the run. So, he was unable to work out in the positional drills. Before pulling his hamstring running the 40, Hull did post a vertical jump of 30 1/2 inches and a 9-foot-2 broad jump. Hull is a good player, but he lacks the ideal size NFL teams look for in a linebacker.
Tight end Jesse James (6-7 1/8, 262) ran the 40 in 4.66 and 4.71 seconds. James is a big target, but some question how flexible he is.
Offensive tackle Donovan Smith (6-5 7/8, 328) ran the 40 in 4.98 and 5.03 seconds. He was unable to continue with the workout because he strained his right hamstring during the second 40 run. Smith is a big guy, with 35 5/8-inch arms and 10 3/8-inch hands.
Defensive tackle Tyrone Smith (6-3 7/8, 288) ran the 40 in 5.03 seconds, but pulled up during the second 40 attempt with a right hamstring injury. He did not participate in field drills. He did manage to post a 26 1/2-inch vertical jump, 8-foot-10 broad jump and 22 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press before suffering the injury. Smith is a rookie free-agent possibility for a team following the draft.
Offensive guard Miles Dieffenbach (6-4 1/8, 304) ran the 40 in 5.32 and 5.35 seconds. He had a 27-inch vertical jump, but did not do the broad jump due to an ankle injury from Penn State's win over Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl.
Outside linebacker Deion Barnes (6-4, 257) ran the 40 in 4.95 seconds on both attempts. He had a 34-inch vertical jump and 9-foot-4 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.32 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.26 seconds. He performed 31 strength lifts.
Penn State head coach James Franklin was on hand and very helpful to the NFL scouts in attendance.
