Raekwon Davis 'so grateful' Colts medical staff caught high blood pressure issue

Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Raekwon Davis was placed on the non-football illness list at the start of training camp for unknown reasons. After being activated off NFI this week, Davis shared the cause: high blood pressure.

"I'm so grateful [for the medical staff] catching that type of problem because we've been seeing so much with high blood pressure, with heart attacks and things like that," Davis said Tuesday, via Stephen Holder of ESPN. "So, it's a great thing they caught that. It was a hassle to get back, but I'm back trying to ... work my way back into shape."

Davis' return came amid a two-plus-hour joint practice against the Cincinnati Bengals -- not an easy immersion program. The defensive tackle, who turns 27 today (happy birthday, Raekwon!), plans to play in the final preseason game this Thursday night to prepare for the campaign.

Indy inked the 6-foot-7, 325-pound former Alabama product this offseason to be a rotational piece behind DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart on the interior. During his first four seasons in Miami, the former second-round pick mainly was a 2-gap player. Gus Bradley's defense generally calls for its interior defenders to be more of the penetrating style. Indy is betting Davis can make the transition.

The DT will have the next 18 days before the regular-season opener against the Houston Texans to get into shape and immerse himself in the defense.
