The Los Angeles Rams made a move to clear cap space.
L.A. shipped veteran corner Aqib Talib and a fifth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2022 seventh-round draft pick, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports.
ESPN first reported the news, and the Dolphins later confirmed the trade.
"Aqib has meant a whole lot. He's meant a whole lot to our team," Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters following the trade. "I think just the confidence, the swagger, the veteran leadership that he's brought -- he's been, really, a big part of what's gone on since he got here and he's been nothing but positive since he got here. Like I've said, I think he's a Hall of Fame player."
Talib is on IR due to a rib injury and is a free agent after the season. While he's eligible to come off injured reserve in Week 16, it's more likely he'll never play a down in Miami. The Dolphins basically bought a fifth-rounder to pay the balance of Talib's $4.2 million contract this season.
For the Rams, the move shaves just $4.2 million off the salary cap. L.A. has been trying to move Talib's contract since the former Pro Bowl corner landed on IR. The money could go toward a new deal for Jalen Ramsey.
"Everything that we do is in the best interest of the team long-term and short-term and just based on some of the things that came from that, that was really what went into the decision," McVay said. "But, nothing but a lot of good things from our end on Aqib, what he's meant to us and, specifically, what he's meant to me."
