San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that questions of Alex Smith's confidence are nothing more than "gobble, gobble, gobble turkey from jive-turkey gobblers."
Harrison: Week 9 Power Rankings
What is the league pecking order through eight weeks of play? Elliot Harrison reshuffles the NFL deck yet again. **More ...**
Randy Moss sent his own message Monday night to jive-turkey gobblers who think he can't play anymore.
The veteran wide receiver gave us a glimpse of the Old Randy with a 47-yard touchdown reception in the 49ers' easy win over Arizona Cardinals. Midway through the third quarter, Moss caught a short pass from Smith, made two defenders miss, got a block, then shot down the sideline. He was barely touched.
It was a check-down pass, the type of safe 8-yard completion Smith traffics in. But Moss turned it into much more. Not bad for an old guy.
"He's still got it," Smith told ESPN after the game. "We all talk about it around the facility. He shows flashes of it here and there. It was great to see tonight."
Moss hasn't become the 49ers' home-run threat some thought he'd be, but he hasn't sulked his way off the roster, either. He's essentially a very famous, sparingly used possession receiver for a team built around defense and the running game.
That reality can be frustrating for those who remember Moss as he was. But the guy still is working, and he still can make a play every few weeks. Maybe that's enough.
