We're not just talking about Washington's expected pick of Robert Griffin III at quarterback. The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports that the Brownsalso pursued wideouts Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan on the first day of free agency.
Both receivers wound up signing in Washington for surprisingly expensive deals. (Although perhaps we shouldn't be too surprised. These are the Redskins, after all.)
When the Browns lost out on Griffin, team President Mike Holmgren griped about how the Redskins-Rams trade went down. He hinted that Mike Shanahan and Jeff Fisher's close relationship helped to deliver Griffin to the Redskins. Comments made by Rams general manager Les Snead disputed that notion.
It will be interesting to hear if Holmgren responds to this report about swinging and missing on receivers. The Browns are hardly the first team to get outspent by Washington in free agency, but their interest is a reminder how poor their wideout depth chart looks. Greg Little, Mohamed Massaquoi, and Josh Cribbs remain their top three options.
Holmgren can't knock Shanahan too much. Ultimately, the two men had the same ideas for how to fix their moribund passing games.
Shanahan executed, and the Browns came up empty.
