ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins signed offensive tackle Mike Williams and released punter Dirk Johnson on Friday.
Williams hasn't played in the NFL since 2005. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills with the No. 4 overall pick in 2002.
Johnson was signed by the Redskins last month. His release comes one day after Hunter Smith's agent said the former Indianapolis Colts punter had agreed to terms with Washington.
The Redskins ranked last in the NFL in net punting average last season.
Williams started six games for the Bills in 2005. He had started 42 games over the previous three seasons.
Williams was cut by the Bills in February 2006, then signed a two-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars the following month. But Williams missed most of training camp with a sore back and went on injured reserve before that regular season began.
