New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora had hip surgery Monday, *The Star-Ledger* reported Tuesday, citing someone informed of the procedure.
The source told The Star-Ledger that Umenyiora had "very successful" surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York by orthopedic surgeon Brian Kelly.
Umenyiora is expected to recover in three months from the operation, which was prompted by the effects from a torn labrum he sustained in 2006.
Umenyiora, 29, forced an NFL record-tying 10 fumbles and had 11.5 sacks for the Giants (10-6), who were eliminated from playoff contention on the final day of the regular season.
