New York Jets fullback Lex Hilliard has spent the summer locked in a position battle with rookie Tommy Bohanon. That battle is over.
Hilliard's season is done after he suffered a broken scapula during Tuesday's practice, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported Wednesday, citing a source. ProFootballTalk was first to report that Hilliard is scheduled for surgery on the fractured shoulder blade.
The Jets later announced that Hilliard, who signed a one-year contract in March, has been placed on injured reserve, with New York signing wide receiver Marcus Rucker to take the roster spot.
Hilliard, who played in 12 games with the Jets last season, was no lock to make the team. Bohanon, New York's seventh-round draft pick, was edging the veteran in first-team reps. What the Jets like about the 6-foot-1, 246-pound Bohanon is his potential pass-catching ability. He pulled down 51 receptions for 405 yards and seven touchdowns while working as a tight end and H-back at Wake Forest.
