Embattled Florida coach Will Muschamp will be retained to coach the Gators in 2014, according to Orlandosentinel.com.
Following Saturday's 26-20 loss to FCS cupcake Georgia Southern, speculation about Muschamp's future has been rampant. The Gators will not appear in a bowl game, have lost six games in a row, and are now assured of their first losing season since 1979. Although Muschamp's return next year is certain, the report indicates changes are forthcoming on Muschamp's staff.
Offensive coordinator Brent Pease figures to be the assistant most at risk, given the Gators' season-long ineptitude on that side of the ball. Even in Florida's 11-win season a year ago, its offense was often pedestrian.
Florida has lost 10 players for the season due to injuries this year, seven of them starters, and most of those on offense. That has contributed mightily to the Gators' struggles, although Saturday's loss to the Eagles wasn't anything for the UF defense to be proud of, either. Georgia Southern's triple-option offense rushed for 429 yards.
Muschamp described UF's problems as "infectious" on Saturday. His exasperation with his team's play was evident in his postgame remarks:
