All signs point to Robert Griffin III being ready for Week 1, but the Washington Redskins quarterback has yet to be cleared for action.
NFL.com's Jeff Darlington reported that Redskins coach Mike Shanahan, general manager Bruce Allen and team owner Dan Snyder planned to meet with Dr. James Andrews on Monday to talk about Griffin's recovery process.
"I did talk with Dr. Andrews before the game," Shanahan told reporters after Monday's preseason win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. "He feels great about Robert's progress."
"(Andrews) really feels the same as he did before camp with practice," Shanahan said, per The Washington Post. "He feels good about him practicing. He doesn't feel like we should put him in any (preseason) games. He's going to re-evaluate him after the Tampa game and then he'll make a decision, at least from his perspective, where he's at. ... If there is no setback, he thinks (RGIII will) be ready."
Griffin put on a display during Monday's pregame warm-ups. Seven months removed from major reconstructive knee surgery, he cycled through full-speed dropbacks and ran a 50-yard sprint in front of Andrews. Earlier this week, backup quarterback Rex Grossman estimated that Griffin was "90 percent capable of doing everything," saying RGIII's "drops and everything were a lot smoother."
"It could come up to the Sunday before (Week 1)," Griffin told ESPN. "There's no rush. It's just about us all being on the same page. And I already actually talked to (Andrews) and we met. He says everything looks good. We've just got to keep going from here."
Our advice to the Philadelphia Eagles, who are slated to meet Washington in the season opener: Prepare to see a fully operational RGIII come Sept. 9.
