The Eagles are moving on from Frank Gore, and pretty quickly.
Former Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is on a plane to Philadelphia and will sign a three-year, $12 million deal with the Eagles, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.
The 27-year-old seems like a solid fit in Chip Kelly's offense despite the fact that his reception numbers have decreased over the past three seasons. That looks like more of a lack of opportunity than anything else.
After losing a dependable rusher like Gore and trading away LeSean McCoy, arguably the best running back in the sport, the pressure has been on Kelly to find a stable replacement that can thrive in his system alongside Darren Sproles.
The nice thing about Mathews is that, above anything else, his fumble numbers have decreased over the years -- he's been down to two each of the last two seasons -- and his yards per attempt have rebounded nicely.
The change will be a welcome one after Mathews' attempts per game were sliced in half last year thanks to a pair of injuries -- sprained MCL and ankle -- and the emergence of Branden Oliver.
Kelly, by the way, continues an interesting offseason that has seen him procure three of the first 13 players selected in the 2010 NFL Draft.
