The Seattle Seahawks have found some much-needed offensive line depth in the trade market.
The Seahawks acquired offensive lineman Matt Tobin and a 2018 seventh-round draft pick from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2018 fifth-rounder, the teams announced.
The move comes after starting left tackle George Fant was lost for the season after tearing his ACL in Friday's preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Seahawks were calling around the NFL all day Monday in search of O-line help.
Although there were other potential options for Seattle, including recently cut Jaguars offensive guard Branden Albert and ex-Giants offensive tackle Will Beatty and disgruntledTexans tackle Duane Brown, Tobin could jumpstart the development of one the Seahawks' top young players.
Tobin likely will slot in behind Rees Odhiambo at left tackle on the depth chart, but he should provide the Seahawks' 2016 third-round pick with a healthy dose of competition moving forward. As NFL Network's Mike Garafolo pointed out, Tobin's ability to play different positions along the line gives the Seahawks a one-two combo of depth and flexibility.
Tobin started 21 of the 42 games he appeared in with the Eagles after being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He finished 2016 on injured reserve after suffering a late-season knee injury.
