Seymour likely to play under Raiders' $12.398M franchise tag

Defensive end Richard Seymour is unlikely to have a multiyear deal with the Oakland Raiders by Thursday's deadline, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, and probably will play under a one-year, $12.398 million franchise tender.

The Raiders wanted to sign Seymour to a long-term deal after placing the exclusive franchise tag on him this offseason. The team acquired Seymour, a five-time Pro Bowl pick, in a trade with the New England Patriots before the start of the 2009 season.

I traded texts with Seymour, who didn't give the impression that a deal with the Raiders was close. "Nothing new to report on this end," he texted Wednesday.

If a deal isn't struck by Thursday, Seymour and the Raiders can't agree to a new contract until after the 2010 season.

Many franchise-tagged players signed new deals before the deadline, with defensive linemen Casey Hampton (Pittsburgh Steelers), Ryan Pickett (Green Bay Packers) and Vince Wilfork (Patriots) among them.
