Southern Miss cornerback Ed Wilkins has been suspended indefinitely after admitting to police that he and another man planned an armed robbery of a residence Friday morning.
Wilkins, a redshirt junior, and Michael Bailey were booked into Forrest County Jail early Friday on felony charges, according to the Sun Herald. Bail was reportedly set at $75,000 for each man.
Wilkins told police he and Bailey went to a Hattiesburg, Miss., residence looking to steal drugs and money, per the incident report obtained by the Sun Herald.
"This is a serious matter," said Southern Miss coach Dan Monken in a statement. "Ed has been removed from the program while we gather additional information."
Officers were dispatched to the residence after a report of an armed robbery and first encountered Bailey, who told officers he was there to visit ex-roommates and smoke marijuana with the ex-roommates, according to the incident report obtained by the Sun Herald.
This, from the Sun Herald report:
"According to the (police) report, Bailey said that a man, later identified as Wilkins, entered the residence displaying a black hand gun with a laser on it and wearing a ski mask. He demanded money and the drugs. Bailey said he exited the house, but returned to get his keys and was denied entrance by the occupants. The report said the three people in the residence all gave the same story. Investigating officers then found a vehicle across the street with Wilkins laying across the back seat, appearing to be asleep. He was taken into custody. Inside the vehicle where Wilkins had been laying, officers found a sweater and ski mask that matched the description given by the victims. A handgun and cash also were found. Wilkins told the officers that he and Bailey were there together and both planned to rob the others of money and drugs."
Wilkins was expected to play a big role for the Golden Eagles this season after starting nine games at corner for Southern Miss last season. He recorded 39 tackles and an interception last year.
