The Detroit Lions added a power runner to their backfield.
Stevan Ridley announced Friday on Instagram he's heading to Detroit.
"...To the Organization and city of NEW YORK I truly thank you for all the love," the former Jets running back wrote. "But now it's on to Detroit for me! I can't be happier for another shot to tote this pill and showcase the gifts I've been truly blessed with! Detroit, I've got a suprise [sic] for you this year, I promise. I'm ready to get to work with my new family, so April 18th can't come soon enough! Let's eat fellas, and this year we want the whole plate!!"
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported it's a one-year deal. Ridley worked out for Detroit earlier this week.
The 27-year-old running back couldn't find traction with the Jets in 2015 coming off a torn ACL. He earned just 90 yards on 36 attempts (2.5 average) in eight games.
Rapoport reported earlier this week Ridley should be 100 percent recovered from his injury.
Lions new general manager Bob Quinn has intimate knowledge of Ridley's skill set, having spent time with the tailback during Ridley's four seasons in New England. Ridley enjoyed his best season with the Patriots in 2012, earning 1,263 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns on 290 carries. Since then Ridley has been marginalized and dealt with injuries.
A between-the-tackles runner was an area of need for the Lions after jettisoning Joique Bell. If healthy, Ridley should provide a good change-of-pace to the shifty Ameer Abdullah and pass-catching back Theo Riddick. Wild card Zach Zenner could compete with Ridley for short yardage carries.
