Marcus Lattimore informed the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday that he intends to retire, but he still apparently has a career in football in Columbia, S.C. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Tuesday, and reiterated the thought on Wednesday, that Lattimore, a former Gamecocks star whose gutty returns from two serious knee injuries made him all the easier to root for, could find a home of some kind in the South Carolina athletic department.
"I'm pretty positive that the president or the A.D. or me or somebody could hire him at USC," Spurrier said, according to the Twitter feed of The State reporter Josh Kendall.
NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport reported over the weekend that Lattimore was considering career options after sitting out practice last Friday with knee soreness. Lattimore sat out his rookie season in 2013 rehabilitating his knee and recently returned to practice in hopes of contributing this season for San Francisco.
Lattimore rushed for 2,677 yards over three seasons at South Carolina from 2010-2012, but suffered season-ending knee injuries in each of his last two years there. Reportedly, he has a tax-free insurance policy worth $1.7 million coming to him following his decision to retire.
