The Buccaneers are in the midst of a secondary makeover this offseason.
Tampa Bay claimed safety D.J. Swearinger off waivers on Tuesday, the team announced.
Swearinger is the latest addition to a revamped secondary that includes former Chicago Bears free safety Chris Conte.
The former Houston Texan will most likely start alongside Conte manning the other safety position.
The 2013 second-round pick played in 32 games the past two seasons, with 22 starts. He totaled 140 tackles, 10 passes defensed and three interceptions with the Texans.
Yet, Houston was willing to let him go after he struggled last year. The Texans were trying to trade the safety prior to his release from the team on Monday. Pro Football Focus ranked him as their No. 78 safety out of 87 eligible at the position in 2014.
His arrival in Tampa will surely encourage opponents to test the Buccaneers' secondary in 2015. Swearinger and the oft-injured Conte won't scare opposing offenses. Both players will have a lot to prove next season and they'll have plenty of opportunity to do so.
