Some analysts believed the Miami Dolphins snagging former Boise State running back Jay Ajayi in the fifth round could have been the steal of the 2015 NFL Draft.
While that prediction could still come to fruition, the rookie has a long way to go before making anyone look like a seer.
First he has to get on the field, which according to Dolphins VP of football operations Mike Tannenbaum, he won't do without vast improvements in pass protecting.
"There are things we like about (Ajayi), but if he can't pass protect, he will never be active," Tannenbaum said Tuesday, per the Miami Herald. "I don't care how talented he is between the tackles. If Jay Ajayi can't pass protect, he won't be active."
Reading blitzes and picking up free rushers can be the biggest adjustment for a rookie running back entering the NFL.
What Tannenbaum's comments really tell us is that anyone expecting Ajayi to eat heavily into Lamar Miller's workload can slow their roll. Before that can happen, Ajayi must beat out backups Damien Williams and LaMichael James just to play on Sundays.
