Oklahoma had a chance to ascend to No. 1 in the polls thanks to a crazy day of college football.
Thanks to TCU, the Sooners did no such thing.
The craziest game on Saturday might have been the back-and-forth contest involving the Sooners and the Horned Frogs in Fort Worth. The fourth quarter alone featured a pick six, a blocked extra point returned for a defensive score, plenty of key stops on third down and a failed Hail Mary.
In the end, TCU made just enough big plays to pull off a 37-33 upset and capture the team's biggest win since moving to the Big 12 in 2012.
TCU coach Gary Patterson's new-look offense answered critics by putting up big numbers against an Oklahoma defense that boasts plenty of NFL-caliber talent. Horned Frogs quarterback Trevone Boykin, who looked vastly improved from a season ago, went 20-of-38 for 318 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also was TCU's leading rusher (88 yards on 22 carries) and used his legs to keep plays alive when things started to break down.
While the Horned Frogs' offense sliced and diced a normally tough Sooners unit, the TCU defense also made big plays, although it allowed 461 yards on Saturday.
Oklahoma freshman running back Samaje Perine, who some have likened to a bigger Adrian Peterson, had three touchdowns but was limited to just 87 yards on the ground after breaking the 200-yard mark in his last outing.
Sooners quarterback Trevor Knight didn't have quite the performance musician Katy Perry was hoping for when she gave him a shoutout on ESPN's "GameDay," completing less than half his passes and throwing two interceptions. His Hail Mary at the end of the game also sailed through the back of the end zone.
One of those interceptions by Knight found its way into the hands of Paul Dawson early in the fourth quarter and Dawson returned the pick for a TD -- it ended up being the game-winning score. Dawson jumped a route and returned it 41 yards to the end zone to make it four straight games with a takeaway.
"I kept telling them to buy in and not worry about the scoreboard," Patterson said during a postgame interview on the FOX broadcast. "The coaches did a great job, the kids did a great job and now we're 4-0."
Moving to 5-0 might be just as difficult with a road trip to Baylor next week, but for now, TCU can bask in the glory of a monumental win for the program.
