As Peyton Manning plans to announce his new team either Monday or Tuesday of next week, teams are entering the final sprint of the chase for the future Hall of Fame quarterback.
Multiple league sources told NFL Network's Albert Breer on Friday that Manning has settled on a deadline for his decision. The latest development came as Manning was reportedly set to work out for the team on Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn., according to the Titans Sports Network.
It remains to be seen, however, if Manning will work out of the Titans on Saturday. The scene at the University of Tennessee was quiet, with multiple sources telling NFL Network no activity could be seen at Neyland Stadium.
NFL Network's Michael Lombardi and Breer remain unconvinced of Manning's reported plans. Breer reported that Titans doctors did meet with Manning but it's unclear if he actually took a physical.
Breer also notes that Saturday is Manning's wedding anniversary.
Manning is not on the campus of Duke University, in Durham, N.C., Chris Cook, the school's sports information director, told NFL Network's Staley Dales.
Manning, who worked out for the Denver Broncos on Friday in Durham, N.C., has told teams that he plans to make a decision on his future Monday or Tuesday, NFL Network's Albert Breer reported, citing league sources. The parameters of the five-year, $90 million contract that Manning signed with the Indianapolis Colts last August are serving as the starting point for negotiations on his next deal, a source with knowledge of the situation told Breer on Friday.
The teams in the running for Manning's services are the Titans, Broncos and San Francisco 49ers.
"We enjoyed visiting with Peyton today in N.C.," Elway tweeted after the session. "He threw the ball great and looked very comfortable out there. Watching him throw today was the next step in this important process for our team and Peyton. It was a productive visit and went well."
Lombardi confirmed an ESPN report that 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman watched Manning throw at an undisclosed location Tuesday. Manning also underwent a medical evaluation Wednesday.
