Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was expected to take some time meeting with his coaches and front-office personnel before making any final decisions this week. He didn't wait long.
Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean reported Monday that Mike Munchak has been informed that he will keep his job as head coach. Adams informed Wyatt, however, that he is letting go of Mike Reinfeldt, senior executive vice president/chief operating officer.
Reinfeldt held a rare and powerful position as a personnel chief, in addition to being the COO of the team. General manager Ruston Webster presumably will run the personnel department without interference and gain influence.
"(Reinfeld) had two years left on his deal, but I thought we'd be better off without him. He is out," Adams said of Reinfeldt.
Adams, who worked with Titans coach Jeff Fisher for 17 years, has a strong personal affection with Munchak.
"I think he is the right guy to get the job done," Adams told Wyatt. "He just needs the right people around him."
But just a week ago, Adams had this to say after the Titans' 55-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers: "I like Mike, I really do. But liking him and getting the job done are two different things."
Adams apparently thought Munchak was getting the job done well enough. Munchak led the Titans to a 9-7 mark last season before falling to 6-10 this season, lowlighted by a number of blowout losses. He changed offensive coordinators during the season, and it wouldn't be a surprise if Munchak changed defensive coordinators during the offseason.
The head coach remains, but Tennessee remains a franchise very much in flux.
