INDIANAPOLIS – A fellow Longhorn has his sights set on breaking Xavier Worthy’s NFL Scouting Combine-record 40-yard dash time from a year ago.
Texas WR Isaiah Bond expressed confidence on Friday that he can better Worthy’s time of 4.21 seconds on Saturday at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium.
“I’m going to break the record tomorrow for sure,” Bond told reporters. “I anticipate running 4.20 or possibly, if I'm feeling great, I might run a 4.1.”
Bond said that his best time in training so far has been 4.23 seconds.
"I've been running my whole life," Bond said. "I've been one of the fastest (athletes) my whole life. So I'm going to go out there, and when practice meets preparation, greatness is achieved.
“I'm just going to trust my training and put on a show."
Bond is among the top candidates to threaten Worthy’s mark. Shortly after Worthy set the record last year, Bond posted “4.20 next year” to Instagram.
The former high-school track star won the state 100-meter (10.51 seconds) and 200-meter (21.19) titles as a junior in high school. He transferred to Texas from Alabama, where he spent his first two years of college, catching 99 passes for 1,428 yards (14.4 average) and 10 TDs, also adding 101 rush yards and another score in 41 career games.
Bond is coming off a slightly disappointing season with the Longhorns and was especially quiet in the home stretch of Texas’ season, including three postseason games. But if he were to take down Worthy’s 40 record, Bond’s buzz would surely grow.
