New York Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano and head coach Rex Ryan have been a bit vague about how backup quarterback Tim Tebow will fit into the team's plans this season, but Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff reportedly has provided some clarity.
Westhoff told the New York Daily News that Tebow will be used on special teams, the newspaper reported on Monday.
Westhoff didn’t provide specifics, but he called Tebow a "more potent Brad Smith" who had an ability to make a difference on special teams. Smith was drafted by the Jets in 2006 as a quarterback/wide receiver and wound up seeing significant action on special teams. Smith is now with the Buffalo Bills.
In two seasons with the Denver Broncos, Tebow rushed 165 times for 887 yards (5.4 yards per carry) and 12 touchdowns from the quarterback position.
