Ryan Fitzpatrick tossed six interceptions in one of the worst outings ever for a professional quarterback.
Coach Todd Bowles was understandably in an ornery mood following the 24-3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs but wasn't putting the poor play on his quarterback's shoulders alone.
"It wasn't just the turnovers, we didn't play well at all in either phase of the ballgame and we took an ass kicking," Bowles said during his post-game press conference. "It wasn't just Ryan. I can name a bunch of people and I can start with the coaches too. It was a (expletive) game plan, (expletive) execution, and it was (expletive) all around."
"When nothing works, you have to change everything," he said. "It was a (expletive) game plan, obviously by the score, and the execution of it was (expletive). You can't point to one thing. You have to get back to the drawing board and coach better."
The Jets had eight turnovers while earning 305 yards of offense. The defense allowed Alex Smith his first 100-plus passer rating day since Week 15 of last year. Smith carved up the Jets secondary for 237 passing yards and a TD; 89 of those yards and the score going to tight end Travis Kelce.
Fitzpatrick was miserable, completing 20 of 44 passes for 188 yards, zero touchdowns, and six INTs for an 18.2 passer rating.
"Stunned ... disappointed ... pissed off ... mad," Bowles said of his emotions after the loss. "But it's Game 3. We have to regroup. We're a team and we're going to be together for a long time this year. We have to regroup Monday and come back to work."
The Jets' next three opponents each made the playoffs last season: vs. Seahawks; at Pittsburgh; at Arizona.
If Bowles' team plays anything like Sunday in those games, the Jets will be staring at a 1-5 start to the season.
