After winning two Super Bowls in the last five seasons, Tom Coughlin is finally about to get some job security. Giants co-owner John Mara said Tuesday that he expects to sign Coughlin to a multiyear contract extension in the next four to six weeks.
"We've had a lot of good discussions since the Super Bowl, and I have no doubt it's going to get done very soon," Mara told the New York Post on Tuesday from the NFL Annual Meeting in Palm Beach, Fla. "As I've said, Tom is our guy, and we think we have the best coach in the league."
Smith: Legacy roller coaster
Suddenly Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin are the NFL's gold standard. Jason Smith examines the unbelievably fickle nature of legacies. **More ...**
Despite the two Super Bowl rings, Coughlin's Giants have had a tendency to look very bad at times, such as last season, when they nearly missed the playoffs after losing four straight midseason games, or 2010, when they blew a big lead in a late-season loss to the Eagles that cost them a postseason berth.
That and the fickle nature of the New York media have led to a perception that the former Jaguars coach is perpetually on the hot seat. He coached last season under a one-year contract.
A second Super Bowl championship, however -- earned with playoff upsets over the Packers, 49ers and Patriots -- seems to have finally earned the no-nonsense Coughlin the benefit of the doubt.
Coughlin, the NFL’s oldest coach, will turn 66 this year.
