Tom Coughlin is the only head coach Eli Manning has ever played for in his 12 seasons in the NFL. We now know that will change in 2016, after Coughlin announced his resignation on Monday.
Manning is well-known -- infamous, even -- for his even-keel approach both on the field and off, so it's been fascinating to watch the quarterback unable to control his emotions now that there is finality for Coughlin and the Giants.
Manning got choked up on Monday as he explained to reporters at his locker how he felt the team had let Coughlin down by not having a more successful season. Manning also was visibly choked up again during Coughlin's farewell news conference on Tuesday.
Coughlin later ended his final news conference with the team by praising the Giants' quarterback.
"(Eli) can handle it all. He's done it before, he'll handle it again," Coughlin said. "He's extremely bright, he's extremely competitive. He's what you want a son to be made out of. He thinks he's the reason. He's not the reason that I'm ... Eli, it's not you, it's not you. It's us. We win, we lose together. Remember when we lose, I lose, when we win, you guys win.
"But what I would tell him, he's going to be right back in here in about two days, starting to work on next year just like he always does. And that's never going to change. And God bless him for it."
With that, Coughlin stepped off the podium and walked away. It was like a scene out of a movie.
