Lynn Swann is USC's new athletic director, the school announced on Wednesday.
In filling the void left by the retired Pat Haden, USC replaced one of its own with another of its own: Swann was an All-American wide receiver for the Trojans in the early 1970s, winning a national championship in 1972 under coach John McKay. He went on to a decorated nine-year NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers that included four Super Bowl victories. Swann was selected MVP of Super Bowl X and was named to the Pro Bowl three times.
Haden is set to step down from the athletic director post on June 30, though he will stay with the school for a year to oversee the renovation of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Swann will begin working in his new role on July 1.
Former USC coach Pete Carroll took to Twitter on Wednesday to congratulate Swann, as did former Trojans star Ronnie Lott:
Swann is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
