Vanderbilt star wide receiver Jordan Matthews' assault on the Southeastern Conference record books continued Saturday in the Commodores' home upset of Georgia. Matthews, a senior regarded as one of the top wide receiver prospects to be available in the 2014 NFL Draft, caught a career-high 11 passes for 89 yards against the Bulldogs, just his second game of the season to finish under 100 yards.
With the performance, Matthews passed former Buffalo Bills receiver Josh Reed of LSU and current Chicago Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery of South Carolina to move up to No. 2 in the SEC record books for career receiving yards. Matthews now has 3,080 career yards, just 13 behind former Georgia star Terrence Edwards, who played one season with the Atlanta Falcons before embarking on a Canadian Football League career.
With his first or second catch at Texas A&M next week, the record should be his.
Matthews' day against the Bulldogs came despite the fact that Vandy was without starting quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels for part of the game, due to injury. By season's end, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior should also be Vanderbilt's all-time leader in career receptions. He is chasing another Bears receiver, Earl Bennett, for that mark, needing 28 more catches to match the school record of 236.
